Listed below are the final projects that have been selected for Canterbury V5 by the Judges.

CENTRAL PLAINS WATER ENHANCEMENT

The goal is to improve the security and prosperity of Central Canterbury through water management schemes that enhance ecological and recreational values while providing opportunity for growth in agricultural and horticultural outputs estimated to increase regional economic activity by around $590 million per annum. HURUNUI WATER PROJECT

A community irrigation scheme with hydro power generation based on Lake Sumner and the South Branch of the Hurunui River, which will irrigate approximately 42,000 hectares of land in the Hurunui and Upper Waipara catchments. It is proposed to provide on stream storage in the catchments with water being stored during high flows and then released for downstream use as required. The scheme will ensure water resources will be managed and allocated in a way that is both sustainable and optimises community and national benefits. Click here for the case study storyboard PDF

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT VILLAGE

The International Student Village (ISV) will attract an additional 1000 tertiary students a year to the central city from overseas and other parts of New Zealand. The students will add $30 million a year to the regional economy, significantly enhancing the already substantial impact of tertiary education on the city. TE AO HOU

Utilise waste run-off from irrigation to grow algae for extensive aquaculture utilising Canterbury's largest solar panels. Connect Lake Ellesmere to the Lake Forsyth HARD SEA OUTLET by constructing a 3 km canal to a shared tidal estuary. Form an Olympic Rowing Venue. Create food for coastal fisheries and attracting the whales to Canterbury shores. Click here for the case study storyboard PDF

Overview

The Canterbury V5 initiative aims to identify five projects of regional and national significance, each potentially generating $100 million revenue for the region within five years and $1billion or more within 20 years. The projects below have been selected from the first round of judging to proceed to stage 2. Judges will select the final five Canterbury V5 projects, which will receive professional support and infrastructure to accelerate their development to full feasibility. STAGE 2 PROJECTS

CANTERBURY MUSEUM REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT

To modernise the interior of the Museum to improve visitor movement and experience, and to upgrade facilities for public, staff and collections. To link the Robert McDougall Gallery to the Museum, creating one dynamic complex to attract cultural tourism and strengthen local communities. To conserve the Museum and McDougall heritage buildings. CANTERBURY WATER MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

To improve the management and use of water resources to maximise the opportunities for the environment, economy and community of Canterbury. Key elements include use of private sector and community skills, implementation programmes that will evolve and adapt to changing circumstances, and measurable targets to enable progress to be monitored. CANTERBURY - CHINA VALUE CHAIN

Canterbury - a centre of excellence in research and development, and in agricultural system - has unique opportunities under the China - New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This project views how these opportunities can be developed in existing and new production and value chains in and between Canterbury and China, with a strong initial focus on the dairy sector. CENTRAL PLAINS WATER ENHANCEMENT

CHRISTCHURCH GOLF RESORT LIMITED

To develop an international golf academy and resort that attracts international and domestic players, students and members. Fostering relationships with Canterbury, New Zealand Golf and other educational institutions to enhance the stay of the students and use of the facilities with an ecological link to golf and the resort, with the surrounding environment and considering design constraints. HURUNUI WATER PROJECT

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT VILLAGE

LYTTELTON PORT OF CHRISTCHURCH

To develop a dedicated cruise ship berth at Lyttelton Port of Christchurch, capable of servicing the growing number of cruise vessels visiting Canterbury and thereby supporting the region's tourism industry. Developing port infrastructure will enable the port to meet the needs of cruise lines and tourism operators, while allowing the port's core services to continue to grow. PROJECT NEW SUN - TE AO HOU

SPACE - SOUTH PACIFIC AVIATION CENTRE FOR EXCELLENCE

To develop an aviation engineering and support services technology park on Christchurch Airport land, consolidating existing and new activity into a cluster of facilities offering a range of inter-related and complementary services. The vision is that Christchurch becomes internationally recognised as a high-quality provider of specialist aviation engineering, design and manufacturing capability. THE LAKE TEKAPO AORAKI MT COOK STARLIGHT RESERVE

The Mt Cook Mackenzie region is aiming to become a world leader in dark sky protection by achieving UNESCO World Heritage status as a starlight reserve. The initiative dovetails perfectly with New Zealand's 100% Pure values and will provide further opportunities to promote the region as a unique tourist destination.
